Every stage of the recovery journey brings with it unexpected challenges. In the early days of sobriety, withdrawal symptoms can be overwhelming. In the weeks and months that follow, learning to navigate triggers and cravings can be a difficult process. There will always be roadblocks, detours, and setbacks—some that are entirely out of your control.
However, there’s support available to help you stay on course: our intensive outpatient program (IOP). This addiction treatment program provides support and guidance through sessions several days a week and is designed for clients who are either just starting treatment or transitioning from a higher level of care. Through our IOP, clients continue to receive support and participate in regular individual and group therapy sessions while gradually returning to their regular daily activities.

The Difference Between IOP and PHP
The intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Gemini Recovery involves attending group sessions multiple times a week as well as participating in individual therapy sessions on a consistent basis. Clients in our IOP often begin this level of care after completing a partial hospitalization program, but for some, it’s appropriate to start their journey with IOP.
Spending less time in our center does not mean that clients receive less clinically competent care that addresses their unique needs. Our IOP is designed to gradually reintroduce clients to their daily activities as they continue to receive intensive treatment with regular check-ins.
What to Expect in Our Intensive Outpatient Program
One of the key components of our intensive outpatient program is regular group therapy sessions. During these sessions, clients will learn skills and strategies to help them manage their triggers and cravings. Some of the topics that might be covered in an intensive outpatient program session include:
- Coping skills – Have you identified your triggers, and are you finding methods of managing them in a healthy way?
- Managing stress – Are there techniques that help to manage your stress levels and help you cope?
- Goal setting – Are you setting realistic goals that will help guide your recovery journey?
- Building community – Have you made connections and built relationships with peers in the program that can provide emotional support?
As you progress through our intensive outpatient program, you will gradually transition back to your everyday life while still receiving care. This approach allows clients to practice the skills and strategies they are learning in the program in real-world situations.
Modalities We Use In Our IOP
Anger Management Therapy
Anger is a natural emotion, but when expressed destructively, it can increase the risk of addiction and hinder recovery. Our anger management therapy helps clients understand their triggers and develop healthier ways to cope with anger, thus supporting relapse prevention and overall emotional well-being.
Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment
Many individuals struggling with addiction also face mental health challenges such as anxiety or depression. Our co-occurring disorders treatment addresses both substance use and mental health issues simultaneously, providing a holistic approach that promotes comprehensive healing and long-term recovery.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a therapeutic approach that combines acceptance and change strategies. It helps clients manage distress, regulate emotions, improve interpersonal relationships, and build resilience. DBT is integrated into both individual and group therapy sessions, offering valuable tools for sustaining sobriety.
Family Therapy
Addiction affects not only the individual but also their loved ones. Family therapy aims to resolve familial conflicts, enhance communication, and improve relationships. By involving family members in the recovery process, we create a supportive environment that fosters healing for the entire family unit.
Group Therapy
Group therapy leverages the power of peer support to reduce feelings of isolation and promote accountability. Various types of group therapy, including psychoeducational, skills development, and support groups, provide clients with diverse opportunities to learn, share, and grow together.
Music Therapy
Music therapy uses the emotional and expressive power of music to aid in addiction recovery. Through activities such as active music making, music-assisted relaxation, and lyric analysis, clients can explore their emotions, reduce stress, and enhance their overall well-being.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
MAT combines FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapies to address the physical, psychological, and social aspects of addiction. This approach helps stabilize brain chemistry, reduce cravings, and prevent withdrawal symptoms, making it easier for clients to focus on their recovery journey.
Benefits of Our IOP
Why do we recommend that clients taper their treatment with intensive outpatient services? Here are some of the key benefits that our intensive outpatient program offers:
- Flexibility – Clients can attend sessions multiple times a week while making progress in their recovery journey.
- Commitment – Clients have the opportunity to build relationships with peers and receive care and support.
- Continued progress – Clients can continue to build upon the progress they made in their previous level of treatment as they reintegrate back into their lives.
Recovery is a journey, not a destination, and our intensive outpatient program can help guide you along the way.
